DRT — Debt Recovery Tribunal

Specialised courts established to help banks recover dues above ₹20 Lakhs faster than civil courts.

DRTs were created under the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993. They handle debt recovery applications filed by banks and provide a faster process than civil courts. Borrowers can also file counter-claims and challenge SARFAESI possession notices (Section 17) before the DRT.

DRATs (Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunals) hear appeals against DRT orders. If a bank files against you at a DRT, you should engage both a lawyer experienced in debt recovery matters and an advisor who understands what lenders actually want in a settlement.
